Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software is quickly becoming the core engine of data center operations. Only 5 years ago, manual spreadsheets, sometimes supplemented with Visio diagrams, were accepted as the default tools for data center management. Since the IT function is the vital organs of any modern organization, improving productivity, efficiency and reliability of data center operations delivers an immediate competitive advantage to the organization. We will offer some facts about why this is so and, if not already the case, why Sunbird DCIM should be in your future.
“DCIM software is a new class of software that gives data center operators the ability to run efficient data center operations and improve data center infrastructure planning and design. It typically replaces Excel, Visio, and home-grown databases. DCIM software can bridge information across organizational domains – Data Center Ops, Facilities, and IT to maximize utilization of the data center.”
Today’s data centers are more complex, more interdependent and more critical than ever before as evidenced by the cost of an outage being on average $9,000 per minute. This has led to the need for more intelligent and automated IT infrastructure management. The tools which enable the data center team to effectively and efficiently operate this complex environment have been grouped into a classification of solutions known collectively as Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM). Gartner defines DCIM as “tools that monitor, measure, manage and/or control data center use and energy consumption of all IT-related equipment (such as servers, storage and network switches), and facilities infrastructure components (such as power distribution units [PDUs] and computer room air conditioners [CRACs]).”
There are several benefits in implementing a DCIM solution. To illustrate this point, consider the primary components of data center management. In the Design phase, DCIM provides key information in designing the proper infrastructure. Power, cooling and network data at the rack level help to determine the optimum placement of new servers. Without this information, data center managers must rely on guesswork to make key decisions on how much equipment can be placed into a rack. Too little equipment strands valuable data center resources (space, power and cooling). Too much equipment increases the risk of shutdown due to exceeding the available resources.
In the Operations phase, DCIM can help to enforce standard processes for operating the data center. These consistent, repeatable processes reduce operator errors which can account for as much as 80% of system outages. In the Monitoring phase, DCIM provides operational data, including environmental data (temperature, humidity, air flow), power data (at the device, rack, zone and data center level), and cooling data. In addition, DCIM may also provide IT data such as server resources (CPU, memory, disk, network). This data can be used to alert management when thresholds are exceeded, reducing the mean time to repair and increasing availability. In the Predictive Analysis phase, DCIM analyzes the key performance indicators from the monitoring phase as key input into the planning phase. Capacity planning decisions are made during this phase. Tracking the usage of key resources over time, for example, can provide valuable input to the decision on when to purchase new power or cooling equipment.
3 Phase Power Balancing Report
Make your power change more efficient and extend its 3 useful life. Easily report your three-phase power load and receive alerts when you are out of balance.
In the Planning phase, DCIM can be used to analyze “what if” scenarios such as server refreshes, impact of virtualization, and equipment moves, adds and changes. If you could summarize DCIM in one word, it would be information. Every facet of data center management revolves around having complete and accurate information.
Sunbird DCIM provides the following benefits:
There are many opportunities to reduce energy consumption in data centers to save on energy costs. Effective management of energy efficiency initiatives requires Sunbird DCIM software to help you see trends in energy consumption. Sunbird DCIM can help you understand what is drawing energy in your facility and find ways to save on energy usage – while maintaining a safe environment for your IT equipment. As an IT or Facilities Manager how do you measure PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness)? Do you have a need to create energy cost reports for customers? Can you easily identify active power, energy, cost and environmental trends?
Real-time PUE is now at your fingertips. It’s automatic:
Automatically collect data from Building feeds, IT loads, and non-IT loads
Automatically calculate and trend PUE in all data centers across the world
Immediately see the impact of energy efficiency initiatives
Compare your PUE Year over Year and with industry peers
You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Information can give you the intelligence you need to be smarter about your energy usage. With built in ASHRAE cooling charts and Smart Rack views, Sunbird’s Power IQ Energy Management Solution monitors and measures all the energy usage in your facility, providing dashboards and reports to help you find savings in your data center. Increase data center temperature without risk and drive energy savings behavior with bill-back reports.
Our Energy management software is standards based and monitors building meters, UPSs, Floor PDUs, RPPs, intelligent rack PDU’s and environment sensors. It consolidates information into actionable reports, enabling you to save power and money, calculate Green Grid’s PUE Level 1, 2 and 3, and drive your green data center and sustainability initiatives.
